Webster Mubayirenyi

Sourced in Zimbabwe

Webster Mubayirenyi is known for his vividly coloured terraced technique, a signature style that reflects the landscapes that shape his vision. His work is conceptual, using highly codified imagery to explore the universal nature of human experience, and through layers of abstraction and symbolism it comments on the spiritual and political tensions in modern African society.

Born in 1976, Webster studied visual arts at the B.A.T. School of Art at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe, graduating with first-class honours. In 2009 he received the Progressive Artist Award. He works across printmaking, sculpture, fabric design and painting.

His work is heavily influenced by spiritual dreams, blending colourful abstraction with themes of tradition, politics and social structure. Working mainly in acrylic and oil on canvas, he draws on rural farming practices: his terraced technique echoes the rhythm of cultivated land, a tribute to agriculture as a cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economy.

He cites Luis Meque, Hundertwasser and Collin Carr among his influences, while keeping a distinct and personal style.
