Gallop of Light by Alex Zipnapechka

The artist

Alex Zipnapechka

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Alex Zipnapechka was born in the jungle around Ubud, in Bali, and still paints in his home village, a place that has given Indonesia many of its finest artists. Now in his later years, he paints the island he grew up in: its animals, and the rituals around them, in oil laid on so thickly that the surface stands up from the canvas.

Up close, a mane or a rooster’s feathers dissolve into pure ridges of colour that catch the light as you move; step back and they gallop and strike. Clash of Plumes takes the cockfight, an old Balinese ritual, and turns it into a burst of colour. Gallop of Light sends a herd of horses running through the same bright, broken light.
